Show Choir provides a wonderful platform to take choral singing to a new level of performance by incorporating theatricality, characterisation, storytelling, staging, choralography, costumes, props and effects into the choral performance. Music can truly come to life by extrapolating elements of meaning and interpretation from the lyric and melody and theatricalising these elements to create a more meaningful and enjoyable experience for the performer and a more powerful and entertaining experience for the audience.
Relatively new to Australia, schools-based Show Choir programs would be a wonderful opportunity for school communities to create innovative and unique educational and performance experiences for many interest groups within the school community, curriculum-based and extra-curricular. Show Choir programs can also provide inspiration for units of work for a variety of curriculum courses within Drama, Dance, Music, Entertainment and Design and unique opportunities for individual self-esteem and confidence, discipline and dedication, talent development, positive peer relationships, student leadership, teamwork, teacher development, industry engagement and school community support and celebration.
Show Choir is a great addition or alternative to larger performing arts programs such as Music Theatre productions. Although utilising a similar skill base, a Show Choir program can create a much more versatile, flexible and inclusive performing environment. Although maintaining a strong skill basis, Show Choirs can be of any size and change in scale and scope depending on the needs and interests of the student body and school community. The rehearsal delivery can be structured to fit into the school schedule but the production possibilities can be multiple and varied. Whilst providing an inspiring learning opportunity, Show Choir could become a great entertainment addition to a variety of school events and celebrations with small scale productions tailored to the specific needs of the event. And best of all, a Show Choir program can develop from existing programs within the school such as music or dance.
This course is designed to provide an overview of how a Show Choir program could be developed within the potentials and limitations of a school community by providing inspiration from the performing arts industry while adapting principals to the practical consideration for the school community. Day 1 will focus on the music side of Show Choir including identity, style, direction, technique, storytelling, composition, mash-ups and performance and Day 2 will focus on the movement including posture, gesture, choralography and staging and also production including design, costuming, props, sound, stage management, music licensing and performance.
The course will be delivered by industry professionals who have extensive experience with Show Choirs, choral groups, music theatre and performance within the secondary and tertiary educational experience and aims to provide an interactive experience to empower teachers to leave the course with a personalised manual to lead the Show Choir program for their school community.
